Dogs Seized from Pittsfield, NH Home
Stratham, NH - On Wednesday, November 16, 2005 the New Hampshire
SPCA (NHSPCA) was called by Pittsfield, NH police to assist in what
has been an on-going investigation in their town. Cruelty Investigator
and Field Services Manager for the NHSPCA, Steven Sprowl, arrived
to find dogs being housed in chain-link kennels, outside with no
water or dry shelter. Fifteen dogs were ultimately voluntarily surrendered
by their owner and transported to the NHSPCA's Adoption facility
in Stratham.
3 adult Great Pyrenees, a litter of 6 Great Pyrenees puppies, 3
Dachshunds and a four-day old baby, along with 2 Newfoundland puppies
were taken from their muddy, feces-filled kennels. The staff and
volunteers at the NHSPCA Adoption Center worked well into the evening
to process all of the very smelly animals. With the help of Dr.
Susan Denault, DVM of Ocean Valley Veterinary Hospital in Stratham,
each animal was given a proper physical before being fed, bathed,
de-matted, vaccinated and tested for heartworm and Lyme's disease.
The dogs are all in rough shape. All 15 dogs were matted with feces
and undernourished. Most of the animals, if not all, also suffer
from flea infestation, parasites too many to name and various skin
and dental conditions. The four-day-old puppy came in emaciated
and suffering from hypothermia and has been placed in foster care
in hopes he will survive. One of the Great Pyrenees puppies arrived
with a major trauma to one of his toes-the toe will have to be removed
immediately to prevent septic infection.
When the dogs are healthy enough they will be available for adoption.
It is uncertain at this time how long it will take to bring the
puppies up to a normal weight and to treat all of the maladies these
animals are dealing with. Donations to help the Pittsfield dogs
can be made on-line at www.nhspca.org, by mail or by phone.
