Humane Education

NHSPCA in the Classroom

Visiting the many schools around the community allows us to share the message of compassion, kindness and respect for all living things. Our programs are fun, interactive and can be integrated into each school's ongoing program. From pre-school to grade twelve, each classroom can benefit from humane education.

We also have several projects for kids listed at this site if you are looking for a project for your child, scout troop or class.

Animal Lovers Book Club - 4th to 8th grade reading level

Tell a Friend!
Sign up for Book Club with a friend or sibling and you'll each get a special chance to help out at the Adoption Center, including naming an animal going up for adoption!

Do you love animals? Do you love to read? And do you love to read books about animals??? Then this Book Club is for you!

We will read a different book every month and then get together to discuss the story. The discussion will be led by Paula Parisi, Manager of Humane Education Programs, and will meet in the Humane Education classroom in the NHSPCA Learning Center for Pets & People. At our Book Club meetings we enjoy a snack while discussing the selected book, visit with the classroom pets and make a special visit to the Adoption Center animals during each meeting!

The reading level of the books is approximately 4th to 8th grade, or ages 9 to 12. (Any age may join if the reading level and topics of discussion are appropriate; please call Paula x 113 with questions.) The first book we will be reading is listed below, the remaining list of books will be announced at the first Club Meeting on October 21st! There are a limited number of books available to borrow from the NHSPCA Humane Education library. Books can also be borrowed from local public and school libraries or purchased online or from a bookstore. If you have trouble locating a book, please contact Paula for suggestions on where to find it.

To join in the book discussions, you must become a member of the NHSPCA Animal Lover's Book Club. Membership is $60.00 for the 2008-2009 school year (7 meetings). Meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Hurry to sign up so you'll have plenty of time to read the book for October!

If you have any questions, please call Paula at 603-772-2921, ext. 113.

Summer Camp

Does your child love animals? Do you want to give your child the opportunity to learn about kindness and respect for animals in a fun and eductional way? Here at the NHSPCA your child will learn and have fun in an indoor and outdoor environment, get up close and personal with the animals, do service projects, crafts, games and much more!

Due to the enormous popularity of the NHSPCA Summer Camp Program and limited number of openings available, a Lottery System will be used to determine placement for Summer Camp 2009, rather than a first come first serve basis. After extensive research of options, and consideration of feedback from parents, we have determined that a Lottery System will provide a registration system that is equitable for all.

Starting in January 2009, parents can download and print a Summer Camp Application from this site to submit into the Lottery. Applications will also be available at the NHSPCA. Details, rules and regulations for the Lottery will be posted here in January, along with the dates for the Summer Camp 2009 sessions.

Junior Volunteers

Students, ages 13 to 15 years old, may become Junior Volunteers. Under adult supervision, they assume all the responsibilities of regular volunteers working with cats and small mammals at the NHSPCA. There is often a waiting list for this very popular program. (Limited enrollment)

Internships

High school and college students who have an interest in animal care can apply for an internship at the NHSPCA for additional hands-on experience. Opportunities are available on an individual basis as scheduling permits.

Group Tours

Preschools, youth clubs and adult organizations are just a sample of the many groups who love to organize a visit to our facility. Tours of our Adoption Center provide insight into the NHSPCA's daily work of protecting and caring for the animals. Participants learn firsthand the responsibilities of caring for a pet and understand the needs and qualities of our animal friends. Our Humane Education department is always happy to schedule your group for a tour.

KIND News in Your Classroom

Did you know that there's a way to bring humane education lessons into a classroom of your local school? KIND News is a monthly humane education publication. This classroom program consists of 32 copies of KIND News to be sent to a teacher. The teacher may select from KIND News Primary (grades 1-2) or KIND News Junior (grades 3-4) or KIND News Senior (grades 5-6). The teacher also receives a booklet of reproducible worksheets focusing on proper animal care using math, science and language arts curriculum. All this for just $30.00 yearly! Contact Paula Parisi at 772-2921 ext. 113 to get the form to order this great humane education newspaper.
