C.L.A.S.S., or Canine Life and Social Skills, is an educational program to promote training focused on the use of positive reinforcement and to strengthen relationships between humans and their canine companions.  The C.L.A.S.S program can be used for existing human-canine partnerships, or, in the case of the NHSPCA, for our wonderful shelter dogs. C.L.A.S.S. is a three-level evaluation for dogs to demonstrate and learn appropriate real-life skills, such as walking on leash, settling when asked, waiting in doorways, politely greeting a stranger, table manners, and come when called; just to name a few.

Developed by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) based on input from dog owners and non-dog owners, shelter workers, and professional dog trainers, C.L.A.S.S. benefits pet adopters, dogs, and everyone in the community!  It provides shelter dogs the opportunity to have their skills evaluated by a professional dog trainer. Passing a C.L.A.S.S. evaluation is a testimony to the life skills that a dog has developed with the aid of our wonderful volunteers during their stay in the shelter. These skills can be transferred to everyday situations so as the dog may become a well-balanced member of a household and a welcome part of society.  The three levels of the program are named after human university degree programs: the B.A. for Dogs™ (Bachelor’s level), the M.A. for Dogs™ (Master’s level), and the Ph.D. for Dogs™ (Doctorate level). The skills in each level vary in the level of difficulty and distractions.

We are very excited to be offering this new opportunity to the canines in our care and to prove just how amazing a shelter dog can be!
